Zambia. Two ecosystems. One expedition.

Two ecosystems. One expedition.

Zambia offers an authentic, slow-paced safari focused on natural wildlife encounters rather than curated experiences. Over nine days, the journey spans two ecosystems: South Luangwa, known for its rich habitat and frequent leopard sightings, and the Lower Zambezi, where open landscapes, river scenes, and elephant herds create a शांत, immersive experience.

There are places in Uganda that feel like the world has not changed in a thousand years.Kidepo is one of them.

Overview

Three landscapes. One expedition into the wild.

This expedition moves through three of Uganda’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations — each one different in character, in light, and in what it asks of the photographer. At Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, you track white rhinos on foot — one of the only places in Uganda where this is possible. The Nile at Murchison Falls draws elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and birds in extraordinary concentrations. And Kidepo Valley National Park, near the South Sudan border, is the kind of place that stays with you — open, dramatic, and almost entirely free of other vehicles. Uganda is unspoilt. This expedition goes to the parts that most travellers never reach.

The light in Uganda shifts constantly — from the soft gold of early morning to the hard midday sun and back again. Between game drives, there is time to review your images together: what worked, what didn’t, and why. Shoebills, African fish eagles, marabou storks, and crowned cranes appear when you least expect them. Every quiet moment is an opportunity. Questions about settings, composition, and timing are welcome at any point — this is not a lecture, it is a conversation that runs the length of the expedition.

The Solara Conservation Foundation (in formation) is an independent initiative dedicated to wildlife protection and community-based conservation in the regions where we travel.

Every environment demands something different. We prepare you for all of them.

01

On foot, at close range

Tracking white rhinos on foot is one of the most unusual wildlife photography experiences in Africa. There is no vehicle between you and the animal. The ranger guides the approach — slowly, carefully, always with the animal's welfare first.

02

Your vehicle, your space

At Murchison Falls and Kidepo, every Solara vehicle is configured exclusively for photography. Each traveller has a dedicated row. Beanbags are standard.

03

The entrance is part of the experience

The drive into Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most beautiful approaches to any park in Africa. The landscape opens gradually — scrubland giving way to wide plains, rocky hills on the horizon. We stop whenever something is worth capturing.

Solara Conservation Foundation

The wild places are worth protecting. Especially the ones nobody visits.

The Solara Conservation Foundation (in formation) is an independent non-profit initiative dedicated to wildlife protection, habitat preservation, and community-based conservation in the regions where wildlife photography takes place.Kidepo Valley and the Karamoja region of northern Uganda are among the least visited and least protected wilderness areas in East Africa.

The Solara Conservation Foundation is currently in formation and will be applying for ANBI status in the Netherlands.

From your host photographer

Kidepo will always stay with me.

I have driven into a lot of national parks. The approach to most of them is a gate, a barrier, a fee — and then the park begins. The drive into Kidepo is different. The landscape changes gradually. The plains appear. The rocky outcrops of the Didinga Hills rise on the horizon. And then, suddenly, you are inside something that feels like it has been here forever. There were almost no other vehicles. There were lions on rocks. There was light on the grass that I have never seen anywhere else — low, warm, and so clear that every blade was individual. I stopped the vehicle and we sat there for a long time, saying nothing. That is what I want to give you on this expedition. Not a checklist. Not a highlight reel. Just the experience of being in a place that is genuinely, completely wild — and the photographs that come when you stop trying to make them happen.

— Your host photographer, Solara Safaris

Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your next adventure.

Is this expedition physically demanding?

The rhino tracking on Day 3 requires moderate fitness — approximately one hour on foot through open terrain. The rest of the expedition is vehicle-based.

Why is the minimum group size 4?

The logistics of this expedition mean that a group of 3 does not produce a financially sustainable trip at this price point.

What makes Kidepo different?

Kidepo Valley is one of the least visited national parks in East Africa. Almost no other tourist vehicles. Wide open plains, rocky outcrops, dramatic skies. Remote, raw, and extraordinary.

What camera equipment should I bring?

A telephoto lens of 400mm or longer for game drives. A wide-angle lens for Kidepo landscapes. Beanbags provided in all vehicles.

Can this be combined with the Uganda Primates Safari?

Yes. The Uganda Primates Safari (5–13 June) ends in Kampala/Entebbe on 13 June, and this expedition begins on 15 June — one rest day between the two.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including emergency medical evacuation is required.

How do I book?
